Herbal Solution To HIgh Male Hormone Levels in Women on Mirena IUD?

Now that there is a new libido medication for women, Addyi, we are going to renew the discussion on what improves libido, and more specifically, what factors reduce libido in women. One reader that wrote that she has a high sex drive and has not noticed a decrease with her Mirena states she’s worried about high androgen, or male hormone, levels and wants to take diindolmethane to control this. Again, we have to start each discussion with a caution, that you cannot manage your medical care through a blog, and that in general, even if we felt herbal or other OTC products might work it's very difficult to know the dose and efficacy of a particular brand as they are not regulated. In general, there have not been any studies to back up a “preventative way to hold onto one’s sexual function,” when you embark on medications that might reduce sex drive. In general, if you are not having a problem with sexuality, any hormonal or herbal way that might change your function could very we...

Breast tenderness.

Tender breasts are often something women cope with. If it’s a day around your period or around your menstrual cycle, it’s not a problem to be too concerned with. If you have just gotten onto a new birth control pill and you are now experiencing new breast tenderness it’s not likely a serious condition, but it’s likely to be an effect of the estrogen content in your pill. There are actually several ways to make adjustments. It may be that it’s a temporary effect of a new pill, but if this is something more on going, and if you like your pills, but still are plagued by breast tenderness, consider the other things: changing your bra, decreasing caffeine, and trying vitamin E. If you are not as committed to staying on the current pill then another alternative may be the patch as it has lower overall hormone levels as the levels are so steady they can be lower. And for those wondering if a crack will explode hormones into their vagina, the ring itself is permeated with the hormone, so cr...

Hormonal Symptoms and The Mirena IUD

Women often are encouraged to switch off the IUD if  they have had hormonal problematic symptoms on oral contraceptive pills. And often this is a successful strategy. If suddenly you have gotten new symptoms of moodiness, breast soreness, acne, hair growth or libido changes, these symptoms may be due to a change in your hormones, and getting a medicated IUD can cause that. A quick self test is to first ask your self are you ovulating. The majority of cycles of women on Mirena IUD or (LNG-IUD,standing for the progesterone component called levonorgestrel in the device) LNG-IUS are indeed ovulatory, and for some women cyclic pelvic discomfort is just the sensation of ovulation which didn't occur when you were on the birth control pill. And women ovulating will tend to have pretty  normal overall levels of hormone in their system. But some are not. If you are having new symptoms, or hormonal outbreaks, track your cycles. If you see that you are ovulating by temperature chang...

When the chin hairs come

Orchids at the Washington Botanical Garden Why are you getting chin hairs? There may be a variety of reasons, but what you may want to know more is how you are going to get rid of them. There are several possible solutions, and to consider in the treatment is your age, the cause of the hair growth, the hair type, the hair color, whether you also have other side effects of male hormones such as acne breakouts, changing hair distribution or increased oilyness to your skin. And finally your goals are strongly considered. There are no chin hair FDA approved treatments other than laser hair removal, but some medications are effective, and often solutions have to be managed with more than one technique. One medication that is less frequently used for women is Flutamide (marketed as Eulexin) which blocks the receptors of the male hormone and is actually approved as a chemotherapy treatment for prostate cancer. The potential side effects of dry skin, dry scalp and green pee is usually t...
