Wellness Wednesday: The Adrenal Fatigue No One Mentions

DHEA is called a steroid precursor. It's balance is critical and an often overlooked aspect of fatigue. And decreases in the serum levels of this hormone can lead to a variety of problems including genitourinary system, skeleton, vasomotor system, skin, brain, cardiovascular system and perhaps all other... and both hair loss and VVA. One of the most common complaints from women, with no other identifiable problem is that they are losing their hair. This can oddly be due to too much DHEA, like women with PCOS, or too little. Healthy shedding of old hairs from their follicles and allowing new ones to grow in can be very healthy, so some loss on a natural basis is good for our hair and if you have no hair loss those hairs left will be brittle and unhealthy. This natural hair loss is cyclical, some seasons it will grow and in some seasons you will lose more, but modern life, modern lighting and hormone exposure in all sorts of ways has thrown those cycles off. So if you didn't...

Adrenal Stress or Strain May Show Up On Your Head First

The adrenal gland makes cortisol, it makes adrenal androgens (male hormones) and it makes a molecule called aldosterone. In fact these compounds comprise whole families of hormones and our heath is very dependent on this gland. If we have no adrenal function at all: this is an acute emergency that needs to be treated right away. We use a lot of steroids for treatment of other medical conditions: from bug bites, to serious infections, and even a short bit of steroid us can plunge a women into acute adrenal problems. Chronic illness, or chronic stress can lead to the paradoxical conditions of too much cortisol being secreted over time, or not enough cortisol if the gland becomes overwhelmed. Over production of certain paths of adrenal hormones is called congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This disease may seem like polycystic ovarian disease. Women can have cycles that are off or abnormal amounts of hair growth, or too little hair growth. One of the most common first complaints of chronic...

Sign of Adrenal Stress: Loosing (Pubic) Hair

One of the most common complaints from women is that they are losing their hair. Hair loss is cyclical, some seasons it will grow and in some seasons you will lose more. In general we lose about 100 hairs a day. Exactly how much you lose, and how thick your hair is at the end of the hair loss is related to both age and genetics. All hair follicles can respond to nutrition, stress, pregnancy, menopause, and medication exposure. But, certain hair loss may be related to unique hormonal patterns. In puberty, usually breast development occurs first and then the adrenal gland male hormones, like DHEA. This adrenal gland hormone is thus a stimulus for pubic hair growth. The pubic hair appearance, at approximately the same time as underarm (axillary) hair appearance, comes from a separate but similar hormonal influences. And changes in adrenal hormones can cause loss of pubic hair as well. Adrenal stress can be detected by several symptoms, and tested for with blood wo...

Throw Back Thursday: What Dr. Adison Discovered The Aging of the Adrenal Gland

Every 8 years our chance of dying approximately doubles. Some of this rapid decline towards death has to do with the loss of function of our adrenal gland. The famous Dr. Addison discovered that tuberculosis, in addition to ruining one's lungs could destroy the adrenal gland. And from this, the name of adrenal insufficiency, became known as Addison's disease. Immune causes, tumors, and infections are all associated with weakening of our adrenal gland that can have profound affects on our health. Medications like steroids can cause adrenal gland problems, but so can other medications, and there is an entire list of medications. For women remaining on long term treatments, it may be a consideration to look at the levels of adrenal gland hormones if you are getting inexplicable side effects. Genetic family diseases cause adrenal gland problems, and can be associated with other problems such as parathyroid gland conditions and chronic yeast infections! Aging itself is not necessar...
