Sex Drive and Contraceptive Methods

When you show up for your first prescription or a renewal of your contraceptive method, your health care provider is likely to check your pelvic exam, see about any bleeding and review with you the effectiveness of your contraceptive method. What women really want to know, based on a study from the University of Utah is how your contraceptive method is going to affect your sexual experienced. Actually some of this research has been done on males. Males are much more likely to use contraception if it doesn't affect their penile erections, their sexual feelings, and their overall sexual performance. The study in Utah was undertaken and reported in November issue of OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY after studies from Europe and the Middle East actually showed improvement of sex drive in women using IUDs. Since some women have a fear of getting pregnant if they are not protected against pregnancy, many women will report a better sexual experience as they can 'let go' more easily....

When is Comes To Sex are you More Male or More Female (Hormone) Related?

Sexual function is related to hormone levels. The question is how? Male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen affects sexual function. When we study body image, positive sexual energy, and overall stamina for sex, these hormones take on a whole different set of implications for our body. And in women with medications, diets, or genetic reasons to metabolize the hormones differently, there are going to be diverse effects on you sex life as all of those can impact hormones. In most studies we are more in the mood mid cycle when male hormone levels rise, but sadly not even every study has firmly confirmed that link. As with other female sexual studies the mystique is still a mystery to gynecologic researchers. As you age your relative testosterone, estrogen balance may change. Thus we like to say you are female hormone dominant or male hormone dominant. And this can be established by a medical visit and testing. Some sexual function in women appears to be positively relat...

Mini Pills Increase Sex Drive, So Why Wouldn’t Mirenas?

Sex drive is complicated. New partners can provide a spark, but a lot is controlled by our hormones. . We all want to understand how to keep that sex drive going at least in the top gear or two, and most of us realize that hormones play an important role in this. Libido can be increased as well as depressed by contraceptive choices. And some of the research is conflicting, In many studies the progesterone only pills (POP) also known as mini pills increase sex drive. But in some studies the progesterone containing IUD decreases sex drive. The progesterone is similar in these two types of contraception, the mini pill and the progesterone IUD, but not the same. Androgen levels should be higher with these two progesterone contraceptives, than they would be on traditional pills or even in our normal cycles. And the male hormone androgen is linked to sexuality.. But are our androgen levels the only factor?

Mirena and Hormone Control

The literature on Mirena has not consistently looked at sexual changes just due to IUDs. It has been reported by some women that they have seen decrease, and others increase in their sexuality. As with other conditions the best first strategy is to get diagnosed, and those that have sex drive changes may have very different physiology from those with problems of orgasm.  If you are having difficulty with orgasms and want to participate in one of our research trials, contact us at 217-356-3736. One reader that wrote that she has a high sex drive and has not noticed a decrease with her Mirena states she’s worried about high androgen levels and wants to take diindolmethane to control this. Again, we have to start each discussion with a caution, that you cannot manage your medical care through a blog. In general, there has not been any studies to back up a “preventative way to hold onto one’s sexual function.” In general, if you are not having a problem with sexuality, any h...
