Blood Typing For Pregnant Moms

Many of us live our whole lives without knowing or having our blood type tested. However if you are newly pregnant it is important to know your type as it is important for the development of the baby. During prenatal care we only look for the major factors, or antigens, of blood types, and whether you have any antibodies to them. If you are showing that you have some antibodies, more specific tests can be done, and in the on line testing world, lots of minor blood group testing is offered. What is most important is to protect the baby from any antibodies that can cross from mom's blood into the baby's blood. Understanding both how this works, and if there is a set up for any danger is part of the gyno's job. If a woman’s blood type is D-negative, and if her partner is D-positive, the baby has an approximately 60% of also being positive and thus be at risk for Anti-D isoimmunization during this or a subsequent pregnancy.
