Women's Health News Wednesday: A Simple Test of Tears Has Been Shown to Detect Breast Cancer

Currently breast cancer detection relies most heavily on a woman being mindful of breast changes or the appearance of a lump; getting a mammogram, or getting a clinical breast exam with her health care provider. For years we have asked for a breast cancer screening test similar to the blood tests that help to detect prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. Since no such test has existed we still rely on the standard tools like mammography. Although mammography can save lives with earlier detection than palpation of the breast, too many women either do not get mammograms, don't get them as regularly as has been recommended, or have false readings which compromise detection rates.  Mammograms have continually improved with detection of density scores, computer re-reads, and the use of ultrasound to clarify the changes on mammography that are detected. We determine when to begin mammograms and how often to repeat them based on a various combination of risk factors, including the scorin...

Breast Density Can Be Decreased With Exercise

Breast cancer prevention has been widely promoted for many years, yet too few women are taking advantage of this. Breast cancer occurs in 1/8 women, and about 1% of women with prior breast cancer are diagnosed with a breast cancer in the opposite breast each year. Mostly breast cancer prevention strategies look at risk factors such as smoking and alcohol, and asking women to avoid these things. There has never been a safe level of alcohol established with respect to breast cancer.  But knowing that in reality getting breast cancer is a combination of genetics, exposure, diet, childbearing factors, and hormones that ultimately causes breast cancer. Delaying when you have children, not breastfeeding, being obese after menopause, and excessively drinking alcohol all increases your breast cancer risk. It may not be blood levels of estrogen, progesterone or testosterone, but the local levels of estrogen in the breast tissue itself. Regardless of whether its the blood le...

Breast Clinical Exams Still Reccomended Yearly

Women hear so much about mammography that it over shadows the fact that women are to see their gyno, or their health care provider, every year for a clinical breast exam. Yearly breast exams should begin at age 19. Not only that, but then you can have consultation regarding symptoms and risk categories and make an informed decision as to when the best time to start mammograms for you will be. The news once again has broken with a new guideline for mammography, with the American Cancer Society proclaiming women should get yearly mammography from 45 to 54, lots of opinions abound, here's one from USA today . And here's an article that focuses on both benefits and potential harms of mammographic screening fro the Washington Pos t. A few years ago first mammograms were suggested at age 35, then it raised to 40 and now to 45 by this group. But the gynecologists have not recommended this to their patients. They have now published in JAMA: “A COG maintains its current advice that w...

Health Care Providers Get New Tool For Calculating Breast Density

Mammographic breast density is also now graded along with the other characteristics of your breast reported on a mammogram . Women with dense breast tissue have 3-5 times greater risk of breast cancer than women with normal breasts, and hormone therapy can increase breast density in 30-50% of women who take it.  The National Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Surveillance site also has a lot of data on breast density at their site. They have developed a tool for health care providers to help them understand what patients are at most risk from dense breasts . Generally a physician can look at the mammogram and the amount of ‘black’ verses ‘white’ components of the x-ray. Very white means very dense. Since breast tissue is actually 3 dimensional the denseness of the breast also is based on the internal structures that the radiologist is seeing. The thought has been that too dense of a breast would then obscure the view of a cancer. In general the pictures are graded by the ‘...
