Mammogram Density And What You Ate For Lunch

Breast cancer is detected by mammograms and mammograms that are read out as very dense, are problematic for two reasons: one is that an early cancer can be obscured, the other is that the density itself may be a sign of breast tissue characteristics that are more at risk for developing cancer. In a study in Spain looking at Western Diets verses Mediterranean diet it was found that Western diet patterns with high fat dairy, processed meat, refined grains, and caloric drinks were found to have more density on their mammograms. Not only that, but the diet effects were really only found in women who were overweight and obese. Since fat cells produce hormones and growth factors it makes sense that being overweight, or having a high fat to muscle ratio would increase the density of breast tissue. At Women's Health Practice we do not feel that one meal will affect your density, and it is possible to reverse the effects of the Western Diet on your mammogram with modifications both to th...

Breast size is mostly genetically determined, and these days perhaps more often than not, enhanced by the right bra or the right surgery. Re-Shape Your Breasts Non-Invasively

Breast shape and reshaping the breast is one of the topics gals get into with their gynos, their BFFs, and their hair dressers on a regular basis. The oldest trick in the book to change breast appearance is to stand up straight, and maybe even pull your shoulders back. And then there is the tried and true work out for the pectoral muscles underneath your breasts to build them. There have been lots of theories, gadgets, and of course the newest bra that have headlined to give you the shape you want, but the bra is with the clothing on, and what shape the breast is when the bra comes off that is what women really want to know. Using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) can non-invasively give you a breast lift. This will work very well on women with B and C up breasts, larger breasts may notice skin improvement only. If you are content with the shape of the main area of the breast itself, and less about how to effectively change the shape of what has come to be known as 'bra fat.'  N...

Is Exercise Making Your Breasts Sag, Your Joints Ache, Your Bones Weaken?

It's tough to know how exercise is going to translate into health for all your body parts, and ultimately end up with the right amount of fitness, the ideal weight range, and your healthiest body shaping while maintaining healthy bones, joints, breasts and waist. Both shape and fitness goals are often in concert, but some fine tuning may be necessary. If you suffer injury, or are slow to recover, you need additional adjustment to fitness. Your physician's exercise goals may be quite extensive, whether you have discussed or not! Fitness program goals for you includes: to maintain enough exercise to be vigorous, have better cardiovascular health, to lessen risks of strokes and blood clots, to think better, to sleep, to have better sex, to feel better, keep your weight in the healthiest range it can be, prevent obesity, and finally perhaps to look better! While all those benefits can be obtained, for long term sustaining of those benefits you have to look at exactly the relations...

When a Mammogram Result Is Wrong

No test is perfect, but especially tests we use in many woman and repeat often we want to know that it's pretty accurate or the total cost of chasing wrong results can be enormously high. Mammograms are one test that seems to be endlessly debated as to how it is done and the accuracy of what we are finding. A new report discussed on the AMA site states that we spend over 4 billion dollars to chase false positive tests. In the case of mammograms a false positive test means the mammogram states a suspicion of cancer, but there is actually no cancer. So it is more accurately termed, "positive of an abnormality, that may be cancer or may not be." As opposed to the situation in which there was an incorrect interpretation of that spot.  Each and every medical test, including mammograms, has many facets to it. The technology to perform the test, the decision to have the test, the results themselves, the interpretation, and when to have repeat testing. All this must be taken wi...

Situps, Weight Loss and Medications

There are many strategies to reduce breast cancer risk, and weight loss and exercise are our front line strategy. And as a side not new studies show that even with the more serious estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor cancers exercise and weight loss will prolong survival! Too few women however realize that there are medical ways of improving breast cancer survival. F use medication to lower your breast cancer risk . The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has changed the tenor of its recommendations in its clinical practice guideline on the use of chemoprevention for breast cancer, and they now are including the medications of raloxifene, and exemestane in the medications not just tamoxifen, and the organization is wanting more people to seriously consider these medication. Their point is that they are not seeing more people use these very effective therapies, and so awareness is not increasing, and more women and their gynos need to take note. Here is what y...

Getting a Better Breast Pap: Halo Hint

Trying to get to know which women are going to develop breast cancer, before a breast cancer is found has been what getting a breast pap smear is all about. Breast Pap Smears haven't been easy to get. The first attempts literally (cover your eyes and don't read this if you are squeamish) involved sticking tiny needles into each breast duct and using miniature fluid douches to try to rinse the cells out of the ducts. Then they took a cue from a mommy to suggest the technique of building a better breast pump in attempt to coax out droplets of fluid from the breast. Then it took newer liquid base testing, also called the Halo Test, and pathological analysis to help interpret those droplets and again the test was improved. But now we have discovered that once we perform the test, that some women will just have their few cells sitting right at the end of the nipple and by pressing the slide to this area then sending that fluid off will improve the pick up rate of the test from ab...
