You may have been told that your placenta is too close to the cervix. And the question is just how far away should a placenta be implanted for it to be a healthy placenta. A placenta that covers the entire cervix is called a placenta previa. When there is labor, at term ,the placenta covering an area that is dilating, dangerous bleeding. Earlier in pregnancy, such as at 4 and 5 months, even with a placenta previa dangerous bleeding is unusual. Placentas need to be far from the dilating cervix when it comes to labor or dangerous bleeding can occur. In the past we have known that placentas implanted over the cervix cannot allow for a vaginal delivery. In fact this isn't a new concept, this fact was described in the late 1600s by Dr. Portal! But bleeding can occur if the placenta is even relatively close to the opening of the womb as when the labor process thins and opens the cervix the placental attachments weaken and the edge begins to bleed, what has been called low implantation. . A new study has shed light on the physiologic processes and we now realize if we use a transvaginal ultrasound probe to get the most accurate measurement we can allow women with fairly low lying placentas to labor and attempt a vaginal birth. Exactly how low is a low implantation: that's a judgement call that you and your gyno just will have to gab about.

ReplyDeleteExperienced moms feel fetal movement around 16 weeks of pregnancy, but it's not a reliable sign of fetal health if you have had an IUD. Most gynecologists will recommend an ultrasound in cases of pregnancy complicated by an IUD.
