Under 1% of women will get pregnant if they are breastfeeding exclusively by 6 months. Over a third of women can get pregnant if they are both cycling and only using breast feeding as their method of contraception after 6 months, and by 12 months, even if you aren’t getting your periods while you breast feed your rate of getting pregnant is almost 1 in 5 and if you are having periods and only using breast feeding at a year over half of all women conceive. We only use progesterone methods as they haven’t shown milk production changes, but that data dates from the 1980s and hasn’t been updated.
