It occurred to some researchers at USC in the Gyno department in 2005 to see if a woman could get better control of her male hormones by using the birth control patch or the birth control pill. The did this by comparing blood androgen profiles
in 24 women treated with the contraceptive patch versus an oral
contraceptive (OC). The pill was a 35 mcg pill, basically a mid level pill, and the patch was basically the OrthoEvra patch that is on the market and thought of as roughly equivelent to a bit higher estrogen dose ). Blood samples were taken at
baseline and end of three cycles. Serum levels of sex hormone-binding
globulin (SHBG), total testosterone (T), androstenedione (A),
dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and
3alpha-androstanediol glucuronide (3alpha-diol G) were quantified by
immunoassay methods. The hormone SHBG that binds male hormones went up more with the patch but the free circulating testosterone was greater in patch users. And generally, the lowering of male hormone levels was about the same in each group, and bottom line, they both can lower your male hormones effectively. So if you have an excess level of male hormones, or are growing extra hair, or having problems with acne, and are a bit forgetful about the pill, maybe you can ask your gyno if the patch would be a good choice for you!
Decidual Cast Periods can be fairly easy, passing some tissue at a time, or off can come the whole lining in one piece called a decidual cast. Generally the lining of the uterus is only 6-8 mm thick at the time of the menstrual period, and it is shed gradually, a few cells at a time. The decidual cast is when the entire lining passes spontaneously. It's not uncommon, but it usually both uncomfortable, and alarming to some. But us women are designed to have some sort of periods Or Not? We have to pass tissue each month. Or Not? Are they good for us? Or Not? Do we want them? Or Not? Is this something that is individual? Or Not? It's a complex topic that I will be discussing a lot over my time in this blog. So lets start with basics: How much do we bleed and what are we loosing, and just what was this that the patient passed? And another basic: track your periods, and the Women's Health Practice site http://www.womenshealthpractice.com/media/pdf/menstrual_chart.pdf you
